Anatolia Plate

The Anatolia Plate is a continental microplate that is literally escaping westward, squeezed between the colliding Arabian and Eurasian plates. This westward extrusion is accommodated by the North Anatolian Fault and East Anatolian Fault, two of the world's most seismically active strike-slip faults. These fault systems have produced numerous devastating earthquakes throughout Turkish history, making this one of the most earthquake-prone regions on Earth.
