Indian Plate

The Indian Plate is one of the fastest-moving tectonic plates, racing northward at about 5 cm per year. Its ongoing collision with the Eurasian Plate, which began about 50 million years ago, created the Himalayan mountain range and the Tibetan Plateau. This collision continues today, causing the Himalayas to rise by several millimeters each year and triggering frequent earthquakes across the region. The plate also includes the Indian Ocean seafloor extending southward.
