New Hebrides Plate

The New Hebrides Plate underlies the island nation of Vanuatu, one of the most volcanically active countries in the world. The Australian Plate subducts beneath it, creating the New Hebrides Trench and fueling the numerous active volcanoes along the Vanuatu archipelago. This subduction zone produces frequent earthquakes and has built an impressive chain of volcanic islands emerging from the ocean.
