Rivera Plate

The Rivera Plate is a small fragment of oceanic crust off Mexico's Pacific coast, another remnant of the once-vast Farallon Plate. It subducts beneath the North American Plate at a shallow angle, causing earthquakes and volcanic activity in western Mexico. The plate is young and hot, having formed at the East Pacific Rise. Its subduction contributes to the formation of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.
