South American Plate

The South American Plate carries the entire South American continent and extends eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. Its dramatic collision with the Nazca Plate along the western coast has created the towering Andes Mountains, the world's longest continental mountain range. This subduction zone is responsible for intense volcanic activity and frequent earthquakes along the Pacific coast. The eastern boundary at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge continues to push the continent westward.
